Todo el mundo se siente triste o decaído de vez en cuando, empero estos sentimientos suelen desaparecer en algo tiempo. Para recibir un diagnóstico de depresión, los síntomas deben estar presentes la mayor parte del día, casi todos los días, durante por lo menos dos semanas. Trastorno depresivo persistente distimia : cuando se tienen síntomas de depresión que duran por lo menos dos años. La persona que ha sido diagnosticada con este tipo de depresión puede tener episodios de depresión mayor junto con períodos de síntomas menos graves. Trastorno afectivo estacional: Un tipo de depresión que va y viene con las estaciones y que, por lo general, comienza a finales del otoño o principios del invierno, y desaparece en la primavera y el verano. La depresión todavía puede ser una de las fases del trastorno bipolar anteriormente llamado bache maníaca. La tristeza es solo una pequeña parte de la depresión. Es posible que algunas personas con bache ni siquiera se sientan tristes.
